Trustworthy AI. Inspectable evidence. Computing education.

Julie
Kumar,
Ph.D.

Ph.D. in Finance · ECE doctorate in progress

I build and evaluate trustworthy AI systems—and tools that make their behavior inspectable.

My work connects adversarial evaluation, auditable multimodal evidence, and computing education. Longer-term AGI and ASI questions remain part of the research program, grounded in present-day systems that can be tested.

Featured / Julie in action

Agentic applications,
each with a clear role.

Meet Julie across the projects closest to my teaching practice: guiding a live lesson, explaining real weather evidence, presenting source-linked news, and supporting the Learn with Yulia series.

Visual identity: Each illustrated role uses a different outfit derived from Yulia's own photographs: a teal teaching sweater, navy floral dress, raspberry business suit, or black blazer with patterned blouse. Julie wears proportional rectangular glasses in every role. The illustrations and run cycle are AI-derived artwork, not photographs or motion capture. Role boundary: Julie is my virtual avatar. Each destination states what is automated, what data it uses, and where human teaching or editorial judgment remains.

A student-made tribute / Two-view motion study

LEGO Julie,
Best Professor Forever.

A joyful miniature portrait of teaching: flowers in one hand, a trophy in the other, a tiny computer nearby, and the professor framed behind her.

Use the controls to move between the complete award and its character close-up. When motion is enabled, the two photographs crossfade with a restrained camera drift and pointer tilt.

Motion boundary: this animation presents two real photographs; it does not synthesize unseen sides or imply a captured 3D model. A future 360° video can support a genuine draggable turntable.

Four flagship contributions

The problem, the evidence,
and my contribution.

Each case study names what the work addresses, what I contributed, the strongest supported outcome, and what remains limited. Every study opens with a real visual artifact from the work.

01 / Adversarial evaluation

A Periodic Table of Data Poisoning

Periodic Table of Data Poisoning organizing attacks into mechanism and risk groups
Research artifactPublished taxonomy table · open repository ↗
Problem
Data-poisoning terminology and defenses are difficult to compare across attacks and settings.
My contribution
I co-developed the taxonomy and the public artifact that organizes attack, defense, and evaluation concepts.
Supported result
The repository exposes the taxonomy, experiment outputs, and a browser teaching experiment for inspection.
Limitation
The website does not rerun the paper experiments; its browser lab is an explicitly separate educational demonstration.

02 / Auditable multimodal evidence

Matryoshka Authentication

Published Matryoshka authentication pipeline and photographs from the physical dataset
Research artifactMultimodal pipeline and physical dataset · article p. 5 ↗
Problem
Authentication claims can become opaque when 2D images, 3D geometry, and language-model evidence are combined.
My contribution
I co-authored an evidence framework that keeps these modalities and their provenance inspectable.
Supported result
The published article, dataset repository, notebooks, and analytic geometry demonstration are linked independently.
Limitation
The capsule geometry on this site illustrates the method; it is not an authenticity verdict or a reproduction of the full study.

03 / Computing education

The LLM Story

The LLM Story methodology showing corpus, model computation, and sixteen synchronized visual views
Research artifactSixteen-view methodology and computation scope · walkthrough ↗
Problem
Transformer explanations often hide the relationship between visual metaphors and actual model state.
My contribution
I co-developed a synchronized visual narrative that connects token-, circuit-, and system-level views to measured or derived values.
Supported result
The accepted IEEE ISAIA 2026 record and public walkthrough make the educational artifact directly examinable.
Limitation
The visuals support explanation and preliminary diagnostics; they do not establish learning gains without a human study.

04 / Autonomous AI evaluation

testFAILS3

testFAILS3 evidence flow from a versioned case suite through APIs, assertions, a hashed run artifact, dashboard, and JSON API
Research artifactProvenance-preserving evaluation flow · method ↗
Problem
Manual model reviews become stale, while aggregate scores can hide missing coverage and provider failures.
My contribution
I developed a provenance-preserving evaluator that runs 14 versioned cases through configured model APIs and keeps official Arena context separate.
Supported result
The live dashboard and API expose suite and prompt hashes, assertion outcomes, latency, coverage, timestamps, and recorded errors. The saved run completed all 14 OpenAI cases; the Gemini failure remains visible and unscored.
Limitation
The cases are bounded regression probes, not a safety certification or human-preference study. Cross-model comparison requires matching suite versions and comparable coverage.

AGI concerns broadly capable intelligence across tasks; ASI concerns intelligence exceeding human cognitive capabilities. My focus is preparation: evaluating capabilities and risks, strengthening safeguards, and educating people to question and verify what increasingly capable systems do.

07 / SINGULARITY & RECURSIVE GOVERNANCE

From recursive optimization
to an auditable Singularity.

The engineering question: can verification keep pace with autonomy?

I study containment as a verification challenge: defining what an agent may change, recording what it does, and interrupting actions that exceed its authorization. If recursive improvement accelerates decisions beyond human review, checks must operate before consequential actions, with explicit assumptions and testable boundaries.

Research direction: verifiable bounds on specified systems and policies. Neither this demonstration nor the linked work establishes provable containment or alignment of arbitrary superintelligence. A technological singularity remains a hypothetical transition, not a measured date or capability threshold.

Recursive tool synthesis

Connect compiler feedback to reviewable tool changes. My compiler-in-the-loop work addresses GLSL shaders and CMake build files; auditing self-created sub-agents is a further research question.

Compiler-in-the-loop research record

Deterministic tripwires

Enforce observable constraints: tool allowlists, capability grants, recursion limits, and review budgets. Such checks can detect policy violations; they cannot directly reveal an agent’s hidden goals.

Formalized risk scenarios

Specify the attacker, assets, trust boundary, and failure condition before choosing tests. Distinguish measured evidence from proposed defenses and document each defense’s residual risk.

INTERACTIVE MODEL / NOT A FORECAST

The Singularity Horizon

SYNTHETIC ASSUMPTIONS

A red event-horizon metaphor for an oversight bottleneck. Increase recursive depth to expand a binary agent tree; watch the review budget and authorization boundary. Scroll changes the visual composition only.

Red nodes: proposed agents · orbiting loops: compiler feedback metaphor · amber ring: authorization gate. No real agents, compilation, or gravitational physics run here.

Inspect the equations, policy and limits

Agents N = 2k. Each agent proposes one action per 8 seconds, so the aggregate inter-arrival interval is 8000/N milliseconds. One reviewer takes H milliseconds per action; load ρ = HN/8000. A load above 1 means arrivals exceed review capacity. At 1 there is no spare capacity.

The illustrative pre-action gate holds all proposed actions if k > 4 or ρ > 1. Otherwise actions pass this model’s two checks. Offered token rate assumes 32 tokens per action; it is not observed model throughput. Without the gate, an overloaded review queue grows by N/8 − 1000/H actions per second.

The high-depth compiler loops symbolize iterative generation; the demo does not synthesize code, check ASTs, detect collusion, or prove alignment. A real containment claim needs a precise specification, a trustworthy enforcement boundary, and independent validation.

THREAT MODELS / PROPOSED ENGINEERING CONTROLS

ASI risk scenario matrix

Expand a scenario to inspect its assumptions and research connections. These are operational design sketches informed by the research agenda, not validated detectors or formal proofs from the Springer chapter.

01 / Recursive driftSelf-modification expands the authorization envelope.Review code changes; enforce depth and tool limits.
Attacker & asset
An agent or injected instruction requests new tools or rewrites generated code. Protected assets are host resources and delegated capabilities.
Trust boundary & invariant
A trusted controller mediates every tool invocation. Requested capabilities must be a subset of the caller’s grant; recursion depth must remain within a fixed budget.
Candidate controls
AST and dependency review, isolated compilation, constrained runtime permissions, and an immutable authorization monitor. Passing compilation alone does not establish safety.
Residual risk
Sandbox escapes, unmodeled effects, compromised monitors and time-of-check/time-of-use gaps can invalidate the assumptions.

Compiler-in-the-Loop Synthesis / research record · Website gate prototype / GitHub

No public verification repository for the compiler paper has been verified. The linked prototype tests only the two stated budget rules.

02 / Information asymmetryHidden meaning or collusive messages evade a single representation.Inspect provenance and cross-modal inconsistencies.
Attacker & asset
Cooperating agents embed instructions in multilingual or multimodal messages. The protected asset is the integrity of inter-agent decisions.
Trust boundary & failure condition
External messages are evidence, not authority. Failure occurs when an untrusted message grants capability or drives an action without validation.
Candidate controls
Constrain communication channels, retain source traces, compare independent evidence, and require authorization before action. Cross-modal agreement is one consistency check, not proof that a message is benign.
Residual risk
Covert channels and mutually consistent false evidence can pass consistency checks. The linked Matryoshka work is about physical evidence; it is not a validated detector of agent collusion.

Related 2D–3D–Text evidence paper · Related dataset / GitHub · Multilingual DRAG pilot

03 / Epistemic poisoningCoordinated sources corrupt memory or retrieved evidence.Trace citations; quarantine untrusted writes.
Attacker & asset
An adversary inserts or edits retrieved documents or shared memory. The protected asset is the chain from source evidence to accepted claims.
Trust boundary & invariant
Retrieved text cannot authorize tools. Every accepted claim needs a reviewable source identifier and an explicit support judgment; memory writes require separate authorization.
Candidate controls
Track document provenance and versions, distinguish independent sources from copies, audit claim-to-source links, and abstain when support is insufficient.
Residual risk
A valid citation can still point to false content. Evidential scoring does not guarantee truth or eliminate hallucination.

02 / Transparent cognitive pedagogy

Inside two attention blocks

Type up to 12 character tokens. Every Q, K, V projection and attention probability is recomputed in this browser. The fixed demonstration weights are untrained: this is an inspection tool, not a language model that understands or generates text.

Bar height = attention probability (0–1). Columns: key positions; rows: query positions. The numerical heatmap is the authoritative readout.

Inspect Q, K, V matrices and the computation

Each block uses pre-layer normalization, one scaled dot-product attention head (QKᵀ / √8), causal softmax, an output projection and residual, then a 16-unit GELU feed-forward layer and residual. Character features and cosine position features are deterministic. Future tokens are masked. This small illustrative decoder differs from a trained GPT or OLMo checkpoint.

Recorded evidence / interactive exploration

DRAG: latency versus response severity

Explore 15 recorded pilot aggregates across five models and three languages. ARSS: 0–6, higher means less secure. The chart updates when you filter; the values are historical measurements, not live model API results.

Loading saved pilot results…

English: filled circle. Spanish: square. Chinese: ring. Exact values and model names are listed below.

Provenance, scoring and limitations

ARSS is a deterministic response-scoring heuristic, not a probability of safety. Refusal frequency and severity answer different questions. These small, single-batch aggregates do not support population-level model rankings or statistical significance claims.

I use Julie Kumar professionally and publish as Yulia Kumar; earlier work appears under Yulia Rossikova. Records were last reconciled with the 2026 CV, ORCID, DOI, and publisher information on October 13, 2026. Bibliographic records are not a count of distinct studies: earlier versions are grouped where the relationship is known, and accepted or unfinished work remains labeled separately. Download bibliography data.

Collaboration & student research

Work with me.

I welcome conversations about trustworthy AI evaluation, multimodal evidence, scientific visualization, and computing education. An inquiry is not a promise of funding or an open position.

Research collaboration

Best for researchers or practitioners with a concrete question, relevant evidence, and a clear idea of the contribution each collaborator could make.

Availability: discussed case by case

Course-based projects

Current Kean students can propose projects connected to a course objective, reproducible artifact, or carefully scoped evaluation.

Availability: depends on the course and term

Student research

Undergraduate, graduate, and high-school mentorship have different expectations. Preparation in programming, careful documentation, and willingness to revise are especially useful.

Funding: never assumed; confirmed separately

What to include in an introductory email

  1. Your research interest or question.
  2. Relevant coursework, technical experience, or prior research.
  3. One project, code sample, poster, or piece of writing.
  4. Your timeframe and whether this is a course, funded-position, or informal-collaboration inquiry.

A conversation is a good place to start.

Let's build
something thoughtful.
